Why National Girls and Women’s in Sports Day Matters

National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) is a nationwide celebration recognizing the power of sport to empower girls and women, promote lifelong physical activity, and advance equity in athletics. While opportunities for girls in sports have expanded significantly over the past decades, barriers to participation, such as access, confidence, and representation, still exist, especially for young girls.

At the Center for Women’s Health and Wellness, we believe that early, positive sport experiences are critical for building confidence, leadership skills, social connection, and long-term health. NGWSD provides a space where girls can explore new sports, see strong role models, and begin to envision themselves as athletes, on their own terms.

Events like NGWSD are about more than sport. They are about belonging, empowerment, and possibility.

THIS YEAR’S EVENT

As part of our Active Girls-Healthy Girls (AGHG) Initiative, we’re partnering with Greensboro Parks & Recreation and UNCG Athletics to host our second National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration!

This free event is open to girls ages 5–16 and will feature instruction in a variety of sports while encouraging active lifestyles, socialization and quality of life with UNCG student-athletes.

After the event, all participants will receive free entry to the UNCG Women’s Basketball game!

The UNCG Center for Women’s Health and Wellness and Greensboro’s Parks and Recreation Department are cohosting the city’s first Day of Play to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports. The event is for girls 5-16, and they will participate in basketball, softball, Pickleball and flag football. The event is free for participants, and the girls will get lunch and the chance to watch the UNCG women’s basketball game afterward. The event will encourage active lifestyles, socialization and quality of life.
